Era of Reconstruction 1865-1885
In 1865,Charles and Edwin Houghton form the company in Philadelphia to manufacture oils and greases for industry. Their first innovation is Cosmoline®, a lubricant and rust preventive still available today. In 1874, the Franklin Institute honors E.F. Houghton and Co. with a medal and citation, “For the scientific manner in which they have adapted the products of petroleum to the wants of man.”
Era of Industry 1886-1915
Urbanization creates demand for expansion of most industries, especially transportation. In a short period of time automobiles, transcontinental railroads, flight and transatlantic passenger voyages all became a reality. Houghton leads the way in the laboratory, inventing products to facilitate newly created assembly lines and steel production.
Era of Geographic Expansion 1916-1945
Post-war demands for American goods show that Houghton’s products need greater distribution. In North America, plants are opened in Chicago (1919), Detroit (1923) and Toronto (1925). Philadelphia’s laboratory moves to larger quarters to accommodate expansion. Houghton stretches its reach across the Atlantic, opening operations in Italy and the U.K.
Era of Globalization 1946-1965
Houghton sets upon fulfilling the world’s needs for growing factory operations by developing new products and building facilities across the globe for wider distribution. With the breakthrough of Houghto-Safe® as the first water glycol hydraulic fluid, industry now has its first fire-resistant, mission-critical fluid which quickly becomes the standard for the US Naval Fleet.
Era of Modernization 1966-2007
In 1998, Houghton changes the metalworking fluid industry with Hocut® 795, the first biostable coolant. It provides longer sump life, odor-free operation and fewer sump-side additives. Houghton also introduces FLUIDCARE®, a premier chemical management service driven by total cost savings and paving the most efficient path to chemical management success.
Era of Expansion 2008 and Beyond
Houghton expands to more than 33 countries and becomes a subsidiary of Gulf Oil International in 2012. Acquisitions include D.A. Stuart, Shell Metalworking and Metal Rolling Oils, Envirotek Management Services, Inc., Henkel North America Steel Mill business, Braemar U.K. and Wallover Enterprises. This continued growth allows us to solve technical challenges and support customers globally.
